Group 1 - Early Flowering - don't need to be pruned at all, but if you decide to do so it must be done within a month of flowering
Group 2 - Early to midseason - Time to prune is late winter or early spring. Cut back 6 - 8 inches above a couple of well developed buds.
Group 3 - late flowering - Flower on old and new growth. Cut back in late winter or early spring. Cut back to previous years wood, just above the base of the plant. If you don't want to lose the spring blooms by cutting, cut back in 3 year stages. First year cut back 1/3 of the branches, the next year the same and the year after that the same. Removing the oldest stems.
